We all know that drinking water is a necessity of life, even if you don’t know all the benefits you can achieve when you drink more water. Even when we do know why we should be getting enough water in, it can be a struggle to actually do it.
If you’re one of those people that want to drink more water, but just haven’t figured out how to make it happen consistently, then the following list is for you. I’ve put together a list of ways to help you stay on track with your water intake and get the health benefits you want.
15 Simple Ways to Drink More Water
- Start each day by drinking 8-16 ozs of water
- Drink a tall glass of water about 30 minutes before each meal
- Whenever you think you might be hungry, drink a cup of water first (it’s easy to mistake thirst for hunger)
- Measure out the proper amount of water you need each day in a jug or pitcher, so you don’t have to keep track of the water you consume. You’ll know when you’ve had the required amount because it will be empty
- Set a timer on your phone or watch to remind you to drink some water each hour. As long as it’s not just a little sip, the you should get enough by doing this.
- Every time you use the bathroom, drink a cup of water afterwards
- When at home, have a cup sitting near the water source and drink water every time you walk into the kitchen
- If you spend several hours at a desk each day, have a refillable bottle on your desk, so you can easily sip throughout the day
- Keep a tally of each cup of water you consume throughout the day (keep this tally wherever it works best for you, on paper or digitally)
- Drink a glass before, during, and after a workout (the more you sweat the more you’ll need to replace)
- Add some natural flavoring to your water if you don’t enjoy it it plain so much (add lemon, lime, cucumbers, strawberries, mint leaves, etc.)
- Have a cup or 2 of herbal tea each day to provide some variety if you get bored of regular water.
- Eat several servings of fruits and veggies each day to boost your water intake
- Have an easy to take with you travel water bottle and take it with you whenever you’re on the go (preferably one that keeps your water at the temperature you like it for an extended period)
- Write down the reasons you want to drink more water to help you stay motivated (if we know why we should do something, then we’re much more likely to actually do it)
How to be Consistent
The reason I provided you with a list of 15 different ways to drink more water was not to overwhelm you and make it seem complicated, but to allow for more choices that work for everyone’s preferences and situations. Keeping things simple is the best way to drink more water consistently.
Pick one of the ideas above that you think could work for you and start with that. That might be all you need to form your new habit of getting the water that you need. It might take a little extra effort or planning initially, but it won’t take long before it becomes just part of what you do. Pretty soon you won’t even have to think about it.
Sure, it’s possible that one or more of the above doesn’t work out for you. The good news is that, it’s easy to just try something else, and you have plenty of ways to choose from.
Although, I think the first step for everyone really should be to start with acknowledging why you want to drink more water. Hint: it’s all about feeling good and living the life you want and deserve.
