You scroll through your newsfeed and see one article saying carbs are the enemy, another praising the Mediterranean diet, and a reel from a nutrition “expert” swearing you need to cut out dairy if you want to feel your best. By the time you’ve finished your coffee, you’re wondering if the oatmeal you just ate was a good choice or the mistake of a lifetime.
Everywhere you turn, there are rules: don’t eat after 7 p.m., sugar is toxic, protein at every meal, intermittent fasting, clean eating, low carb, high fat, and it goes on and on. And as a mom, that pressure feels even heavier because it’s not just about you, you’re also trying to feed your family the “right” way.
No wonder it feels so overwhelming. You’re bombarded with mixed messages, yet deep down, you just want something simple. You want to feel good in your body, have the energy to keep up with life, and to know you’re doing your best without second-guessing every bite or food choice.
You’ve been conditioned to trust the “experts” and the rules instead of your own body. But, there is a simpler way to know that you are making the healthy choices that will work for you and your family.
Why Healthy Eating Feels So Complicated
There aren’t just rules about how, what and when to eat, there’s also the fact that the rules seem to keep changing. One day eggs are good for you and the next, you should avoid them completely if you want to avoid illness and disease.
We hear different advice from different sources, that tend to conflict with each other. Each of them say that their way is the only way to be healthy. Are these rigid rules really a path to health or just a way for them to profit off of your struggles when you’re trying to do the right thing?
With all the changing of rules and mixed messages, it seems impossible to know what healthy eating actually looks like. It becomes so overwhelming that it just causes guilt, stress and confusion when trying to plan for meals. It’s not surprising that many of us just throw in the towel and eat whatever is available and convenient most of the time, even if it doesn’t make us feel great.
The Cost of Staying Stuck
As I already mentioned, this confusion can lead to feelings of guilt, shame and second guessing ourselves and the advice we hear. Two common ways to deal with this is, we can either try to follow the rules, which tends to be followed by feeling like failures, or we can give up and tell ourselves it’s just not worth it.
Both of these approaches can take their toll on us. Trying to follow the strict rules becomes stressful and generally doesn’t work in our real lives, where we don’t always have control over our time and the food that’s available. That added stress can impact us physically and mentally. On the flip side, giving up on trying to figure out how to eat healthy and just going with what’s convenient and tastes good can leave you malnourished and drained of energy.

This doesn’t just impact you alone, either. Our kids are watching us. They notice our struggle with food. They see us trying to follow rules and stressing about our choices. They also see when we’ve just given up and don’t feel good in our bodies.
So, what if we don’t give up on ourselves and healthy eating, but we do get rid of the rules? What if we try connecting to our bodies and their needs instead of listening to the everchanging advice of the experts?
The Truth About How to Eat Healthy
If you want to eat healthy, you’ll need to know that it’s not about being perfect. It’s about being consistent in making balanced choices. Cutting out whole food groups or denying yourself the foods you love, is not balance.
You also need to remember that your body is not the enemy. We don’t have to fight against our bodies and force ourselves to eat in a way that doesn’t feel good or taste good to us. Our bodies are designed to know and tell us what they need. We just need to listen to the cues and work with our bodies.
I’m sure you’ve heard that food is fuel, and that is true, but it is also meant to be enjoyed. Healthy eating means also allowing foods that bring us joy. They don’t have to be packed with nutrients all of the time. Sometimes we can eat things just because we love the taste, texture and smell.
If you’ve been following the rules for awhile (or at least trying to), it may feel a little scary to stop and instead start trusting your body. But, it will be so worth it when you discover the freedom that comes with it.
How to Start Tuning Into Your Body
It’s one thing to say that you want to start tuning into your body and eat healthy, but it also takes some action and effort on your part as well. It’s not going to just happen. So, here are some things that you can do to get started:
- Pause Before Eating – Check in: am I hungry, tired, stressed, or bored?
- Build Balanced Plates – Include protein, carbs, and fats in a way that feels satisfying.
- Drop the All-or-Nothing Mindset – One meal or snack doesn’t “ruin” your health.
- Notice How Foods Make You Feel – Energized, satisfied, sluggish, bloated, satiated?
- Practice Full Permission – Allow all foods, then notice what actually feels good long term.
Why This Approach Works Long-Term
Following someone else’s rules doesn’t come naturally and won’t lead to success in the long run. Whether it’s due to the rules being restrictive, not working in your life or just not feeling right to you, it sets us up to fail.
Following cues from your own body takes away the guess work and fits more easily into your daily life. You also build confidence and trust in your body and your ability to provide your body what it needs, you don’t have to rely on any outside rules.
Not having to follow rules naturally creates more joy and peace around food. When food choices are enjoyable we don’t have to work hard to be consistent. We will just want to continue feeling good without the frustration and overwhelm weighing us down and making us feel guilty because we weren’t perfect.
It also helps Moms pass healthy eating habits down to their kids. Do you want your kids thinking that they always have to be very controlled when it comes to food and that they also have to stay on top of which foods have been deemed “good” or “bad” all the time. Or, would you like your kids to know that they can choose foods based on what their bodies need and what they enjoy? Feeling like your setting a healthy example for your kids can be another motivator to make the change permanent.
You Don’t Have to Stay Stuck
Despite what you may have been thinking, that there isn’t anything wrong with you and you don’t lack enough willpower when it comes to eating right, you don’t need to be fixed. What needs to change is the path that you’re on. Instead of following some one else’s game plan, start looking from within. You already have the wisdom within you to eat in the exact way that your body needs.
Your new path could be as simple as asking yourself what foods you truly enjoy or paying attention to the hunger and fullness cues your body gives you. Just take it one small and simple step at a time. There’s no rules or deadlines and definitely no need to take perfect action.
