I know it can be so draining to constantly be thinking about food, your weight, how you feel in your body and how you’re going to start over and get back on track all the time. You get stuck on the diet roller coaster and experience all the highs and lows that go along with it. You feel so much hope in the beginning, you put in the effort, only to feel burnt out and guilty for not making it work.
It always feels like a personal failure, like there’s something wrong with you because you can’t make it work. You think it’s your lack of willpower, but the truth is, it’s not more willpower that you need. Healing and feeling better in and about your body doesn’t come from another diet or plan. Real healing and sustainable wellness comes from getting off that endless roller coaster ride and breaking up with dieting for good.
The Diet Cycle Explained (and Why It Keeps You Stuck)
As I mentioned above, it can be exciting to get started with a new diet/plan when you believe it’s going to be the answer to you feeling better in your own skin. You’re excited for the outcome, so you’re motivated to do what you’ve been told to do, to achieve that result.

But, unfortunately that excitement dims when we are feeling restricted, unsatisfied and hungry. It’s not sustainable, so we quit. Then we feel like failures. However, you did not fail! The diet/plan failed you. It wasn’t designed to be sustained. It was designed to get you some initial results and keep you coming back for more. They want to entice you with new ways. The diet industry doesn’t want to solve your problem, they want to sell you more “solutions”. That’s how they stay in business. It is a $71 billion industry after all.
Even if you’ve realized that none of these diets and plans are working for you, it can still be difficult to break up with dieting and end the cycle. The marketers can be very convincing and you don’t want to just give up on yourself, right? And, you don’t have to give up. You can achieve overall health and well being without them and really , in spite of them. There is a better way, but you won’t fully experience the freedom until you break up with the diet cycle.
What Happens When the Scale Controls Your Self-Worth
For many women, the scale is what they use to gauge their progress. When we allow the number on the scale to determine our progress, our worth and our mood, we are doing ourselves a disservice. Giving the power to that number is frustrating and makes us feel like we have no control over our bodies. We actually don’t have any direct control over what our bodies do in terms of weight.
What we do have control over is, how we treat ourselves, the healthy habits we create and how we view ourselves regardless of what we weigh. When we step away from he scale, we can start to focus more on what really makes a difference.
Would you rather see a specific number on the scale or feel energized, confident, comfortable in your clothes and eat food that digests well and satisfies you? Breaking up with dieting doesn’t mean you won’t see the numbers on the scale move, it just means that you won’t have to focus on them to know you’re making a difference.
The Freedom of Eating Without Tracking or Counting
If you’ve been tracking your calories, points or macros or have ever done so, you know how tedious it can be. It sets us up for the “all or nothing” mentality trap. If we stay within our numbers we are successful and if we go over, we have failed and might as well go all out. Just keep eating, because, “what’s the point now?”.
Counting becomes much more about control than it does about nourishing our bodies properly. When we try to control by the numbers and amounts, we are letting go of the trust we should have for our bodies. Our bodies really do know what they need. They want to be nourished, not starved and deprived.
When you let go of that control and start trusting your body, you can regain the power by tuning into hunger/fullness, as well as satisfaction. Wouldn’t it feel much more enjoyable to have a meal that you chose because you love the taste, it energizes you and it digests well, instead of choosing foods based off the calorie count and what you’ve already eaten that day?
Imagine the time and energy you’d save if you didn’t have to keep tabs on the numbers! Wouldn’t it feel great to break up with dieting forever?
How Clothing Impacts Body Image (and Dieting Urges)
How does your day tend to go when your clothes are too tight or uncomfortable on you? Do you spend the day distracted by those feelings and unable to focus on the more important things in your life? Do you avoid buying the next size up because it feels like a failure and you promise yourself that you’ll just have to do better and make the clothes you already have fit you?
You won’t be able to shame yourself into a smaller body and those uncomfortable clothes that you hold onto will do nothing for your confidence either. Treating yourself well, wearing clothing that makes you feel comfortable, will be more effective in boosting your mental health and confidence. It will also give you back the time and focus that you lost wearing those too tight waistbands.

This applies to those clothes sitting in your closet that you never wear as well. Getting rid of those “someday” items will release the constant reminder and disappointment you feel when you see them. Because again, guilt and shame will not get you where you want to be.
Protecting Your Mind: Curating a Diet-Free Social Media Feed
When we are constantly bombarded by diet culture messaging we can’t help but feel like there must be something wrong with us when we don’t fit the ideal body size or shape that we are being told is healthy. Of course we will naturally compare ourselves to those “after” pics that pop up everywhere. And our insecurities will automatically creep in.
How do you think it would feel to not be constantly exposed to this type of messaging and images? For most women, removing the diet culture influence we face daily can be very freeing and offer a lot of relief when it comes to how they view their own bodies.
When we no longer look for the extremes and surround ourselves with supportive and realistic voices, we can start to heal our relationship with our bodies. We can move from a place of wanting to “fix” ourselves, to a place of wanting to nurture and care for ourselves. The latter will always lead to more sustainable health and well being.
What Healing Actually Looks Like (The Gentle, Doable Approach)
Healing your relationship with food and your body isn’t going to happen overnight. It’s not a another quick fix and you can’t just flip a switch in your brain. It takes gradual and intentional effort to truly heal and break free from the mentality has that been keeping you stuck.
Healing is a process made up of small and compassionate steps that creates shifts to rebuild trust with your body. The only way to start this, is to break up with dieting. If you’re not going to rely on the diet and plan rules anymore, then you’ll need to regain that trust in yourself to know what is right for you.
Trusting your body means that you can go out with friends, eat foods that are available and not stress about whether they are in your plan or not. You can eat when you are hungry, instead of following a set schedule or amount. You can focus more on what feels good to you and not have to worry about what you “should” be doing.
